All Region Phase 1 Information

Hello All,

Here is a lot of IMPORTANT information regarding High School All-Region phase 1 auditions. Please take the time to read it before this upcoming Saturday.

Event: High School All-Region (Phase 1)
Date: Saturday, December 7, 2013
Location: Berkner High School, 1600 E. Spring Valley, Richardson
Time: 12:30 PM- 6:00 PM (please check your audition time)
Warm-up Area: Auditorium
Attire: Dress Clothes
i.e. boys: slacks/ khakis, dress shirt/polo.
i.e. girls: dress, skirt of appropriate length, dress pants, dress shirt, blouse.

*NO RHS/RHS BAND APPAREL

Lunch: Please eat before event or bring money for concession stand (cafeteria)

* Instrument and Accessories (i.e. reeds, valve oil, etc.)

AUDITION PROCEDURE:

PHASE I PROCEDURE FOR WIND INSTRUMENTS:

STUDENT SIGN-IN PROCESS

* Students need to be at their audition room per their sign-in time on the room assignment list.
* Students should write down their audition letter on their audition music. Audition LETTERS have been pre-assigned; please not change audition letters or rooms with any other student.
* Students should do the bulk of their warming up prior to their sign-in time.
* IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT STUDENTS ENTER THE AUDITION ROOM WITH THEIR SIGN-IN GROUP. If a student fails to show up with their group, they will be SUBJECT TO DISQUALIFICATION (this DOES NOT apply to PRE-APPROVED late arrival students).

“IN THE ROOM” PROCEDURE

* All members of the group will be in the room at the same time (“round robin”). Round 1 will be the 1st etude cuts. Round 2 will be the 2nd etude cuts, and Round 3 will be the 3rd etude cuts.
* The inside monitor will give all instructions to the students inside the room. No communication between the auditioning students and the judges is permitted.
* THE STUDENT SHARES EQUAL RESPONSIBILITY THAT THEIR CORRECT AUDITION LETTER IS CALLED OUT BEFORE THEY BEGIN THEIR AUDITION.
* The contestants will be seated in the room alphabetically by audition letter and must perform in the following order:
Round 1: Top to bottom
Round 2: 1/3 down to bottom, top to 1/3 down
Round 3: 2/3 down to bottom, top to 2/3 down

* A non-audible metronome may be used prior to the performance by the auditioning student–not during their performance. Non-performing students may not use a metronome during another student’s audition. Audible metronomes are not to be allowed in the audition area. As per TMEA policy, STUDENTS MAY NOT USE CELL PHONE APP METRONOMES.
* With the exception of metronomes, absolutely no electronic equipment will be allowe d inside the audition room during the audition. This includes but is not limited to iPods, radios, CD players, electronic games, recording devices, cellular telephones, computers, etc. (Percussionists may use an electronic device to generate tuning notes for timpani, but it may not be a cell phone)
* At the beginning of the audition, the students will be allowed to warm-up for one minute.
* Prior to each excerpt, if a student so desires, a brief warm-up of no more than 5 seconds is appropriate. A student may only play the starting note of the excerpt.
* Mallet percussion may only play a roll on the starting note. Snare drum and timpani may only play a roll on the drum.
* Timpani students will be allowed up to 30 seconds for tuning before warm-up timing begins. Timpani pedals will be reset after each performer.
* After each fifth person plays, all students shall warm-up simultaneously for 20-30 seconds. There will be no restrictions on what the students ca n play during the group warm-up. However, disruptive activity could be subject to disciplinary action, including being removed from the audition process.
* All students in the group must remain in the room until their entire group is done. Once their group is done, they are free to leave the contest. Results will be posted once the ENTIRE ROOM has finished.

TRUMPETS

The organizers who are picking the cuts for this Saturday thought that some advance notice was in order regarding the trumpet etudes. Please let your kids know that there will not be any repeats in either phase 1 or phase 2.

NEW TMEA POLICY REGARDING CELL PHONES

* No electronic devices may be used or accessed by a student participant until the results for the student’s section have been posted or announced.
* Failure to comply with this regulation may result in student disqualification.
* The list of non-allowable electronic devices includes, but is not limited to, phones, electronic games, computers, cameras and playback systems.

PERCUSSION AUDITION PROCEDURE

* There are 3 separate rooms for percussion. All of the snare drums will be in one room, all of the marimbas will be in the second room, and all of the timpani will be in the third room.
* Each group will begin in their assigned room. As each audition letter is called, the student will go to his instrument (or the one that will be provided) and play the selected portion of the music.
* When all students in Group 1 of ea ch percussion room have finished their 1st piece, the group and their judges will move to the next instrument audition room. This process continues until each group has finished all three etudes.

REMINDERS

* RESULT POSTINGS: All results will be posted in the cafeteria. RESULTS ARE NOT OFFICAL UNTIL 1 HOUR AFTER THE ENTIRE PHASE 1 IS OVER.
* Please REMAIN IN THE AUDITORIUM until it is time for your group to audition.
* If student advances to Phase 2, auditions will occur on Monday, December 9th (Details to follow)

PAYMENT

The student accounts will be charged $12.00 (entry fee). If you entered Freshmen All-Region, your account will be charged $24.00.

PAYMENT OPTIONS

If you are paying with cash, please be sure to send payment by December 15th to the band hall. Place it in the safe located in the Director’s Hallway in an envelope labeled All-Region/Students Name. If you are paying with a check, make the check out to RABC and in the memo line write All-Region.
