Jesus Marquez

Director of Bands/ Fine Arts Coordinator

Jesus Marquez is proud to serve the community of Richardson High School as Director of Bands, Chair of the Music Department and Fine Arts Coordinator. In this role, Mr. Marquez oversees all aspects of the Richardson High School fine arts cluster. His teaching responsibilities include the Wind Symphony, Marching Band and AP Music Theory. He also serves as the co-director for the Symphony Orchestra and the conductor for the yearly fine arts musical production.

Mr. Marquez joined the Richardson High School band staff in Fall of 2011 and became the Director of Bands in Spring of 2015. His ensembles have earned UIL superior ratings in four separate categories and have received Grand Champion, Best in Class and Overall Outstanding at the following contests: Dallas Winds Invitational Windband Festival, South Coast Music Festival, Director’s Choice Festival, Bluebonnet Classic Festival and Festival Disney. His ensembles have also been named a National Winner by the Foundation for Music Education in the Mark of Excellence/National Wind Bands Honors Project and Dallas Summer Musicals Top 10 Orchestra. The Golden Eagle Marching Band has advanced to the UIL Area Marching Contest every eligible year and most recently were awarded the Dave Campbell’s Texas Football “Most Spirited Band” and 99.5 The Wolf! “Best Band in the Land.” Many of his students have been selected for the 6A All-State Band and have received composition awards at the AP Arts Young Masters, PTA Reflections and Dallas Symphony Orchestra Young Composers. In 2018, the AP music theory program was recognized as a “Model of Excellence in AP Fine Arts Education” by the O’Donnell Foundation. In 2019, the band program was recognized at The Midwest Clinic by the National Band Association as a National Winner of the Programs of Excellence Blue Ribbon Award.

Mr. Marquez has been awarded The Board of Directors Excellence in Education Grant nine times and was one of only seven recipients to receive a Richardson Education Association Scholarship in 2012 to further his education.  Mr. Marquez has been named Richardson ISD Mentor Teacher and Richardson HS Eagle of the Month. In 2016, he was awarded Top 10 teacher by the Dallas Mavericks/UPS Store Teacher Recognition Program. In 2018, he was named the Richardson ISD Fine Arts Outstanding High School Staff Member and in 2021, he named the Phi Beta Mu Young Bandmaster of the Year.

Mr. Marquez received a Master’s degree in Wind Conducting from the University of Houston, where he served as a graduate assistant for the University Bands under the direction of David Bertman and Marion West. He also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Texas Christian University, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude. During his time at TCU, he served as Drum Major and Vice President for the “Horned Frog” Marching Band and had the privilege to conduct in the 2010 Fiesta Bowl. Mr. Marquez was the principal bass clarinetist for both the Wind Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra at TCU. During this time, he also studied conducting with Bobby Francis and had the honor to guest conduct various ensembles. After graduation, he was invited to perform with the marching band in the 2011 Rose Bowl, 2011 Poinsettia Bowl and 2012 Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl.

His professional affiliations include the Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, National Band Association, Richardson Education Association, RISD Excellence in Education, Kappa Kappa Psi, Mu Phi Epsilon, Kappa Delta Pi, Phi Theta Kappa and Omicron Delta Kappa. He resides with his wife, Ashley, in Allen, TX.
