Do you want to play in the Band?!?!?

Then you don’t want to miss the 5th Grade “Try the Instrument” events at RHS on Thursday, April 3rd from 5:00p-8:00p or Saturday, April 12th from 8:00a-12:00p. All you need to do is make an appointment. Here is how to sign up!

If you attend ACM, MST, RISD Academy, Dover or Heights:

  1. Call the West JH Band Directors at 469-593-3660 to schedule an appointment
  2. Come to the RHS band Hall (directions below) on Saturday. Plan to arrive about 5 minutes before your appointment time.

How are students matched to their instruments?

There are several factors that go into how each student is placed on an instrument. These include:

  • Student preference: What is the student interested in playing?
  • Student suitability: There are certain physical traits that can make a student more or less suitable for any given instrument. For instance, students with certain lip shapes may be less successful with certain brass instruments or flute. Students who are double jointed will often be less suited to instruments such as clarinet, oboe or bassoon. Students with smaller hands may not be well suited for Saxophone. These are just a few examples.
  • Screener recommendation: When a student tries out an instrument, he/she will be worked with by a band director or instrumental specialist to see if the instrument is a good physical/skill set fit.

Once I get to the event, how does it work?

  1. When you arrive, you’ll check in at the “Check In/Check Out table” where a director will get your contact information. Additionally, you’ll pick up some forms and an instruction sheet that will guide you through the process.
  2. After checking in, you’ll proceed onto the Band Hall. Inside the Band Hall there are 8 different stations for the student to try. These include: Flute, Double Reed, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet/French Horn, Trombone, Euphonium and Percussion (there are two different percussion rooms – students interested in percussion can be screened in either room).
  3. Before checking out, students must try out at least three different instruments. Lots of students try out all 8 just to see what they like the best!
  4. Once the student has tried out at least three instruments, student and parent will go to Station No. 2 where you will meet with a Head Band Director to decide what instrument will be yours!
  5. Next you’ll head to Station No. 3 to learn about instrument rentals (see more on instrument rentals below).
  6. Lastly, you’ll head back to the Check in/check out table to get all checked out!

How do I reserve an instrument?

After you have chosen an instrument, you will meet with representatives from the music store to reserve your band instrument. You will need to pay the first month’s rental to reserve an instrument. For automated bill pay you will need a credit card or cancelled check. You will also purchase the required accessories at this time. It is important to reserve an instrument with the music store at this time – you may cancel the contract anytime prior to receiving the instrument with no financial penalty. If you do not reserve an instrument at this time the music store may run out of available instruments.

Will my son/daughter leave with an instrument on Saturday/Thursday?

The “Try the Instrument” events are just designed to fit a student to the right instrument. Unless you sign up for the “Quick Start Program”, students will receive their instruments in August at the start of the 6th grade year.

What is the “Quick Start Program”?

The Quick Start program allows for students to receive their new instrument EARLY and begin private music instruction over the summer. The Junior High staff can answer any questions you might have about this exciting option!
