UIL Area Marching Contest

Our biggest contest of the season is THIS Saturday, October 27th at Mesquite Memorial Stadium. Below is ALL the information you’ll need for the day.


10:15am: Rehearsal at Eagle Stadium
11:15am: Lunch is served at RHS, get changed
11:55am: Inspection in Band Hall
12:00pm: Load buses
12:15pm: Depart
1:00pm: Check in at Mesquite Memorial Stadium
1:40pm: Warm Up
2:30pm: Prelims Performance
5:15pm: Finals Announcement

The UIL Area Marching Contest is Prelims/Finals format contest. This means that, after all the bands march once in Prelims, they will select the top scoring 10 bands to perform again in Finals. The finalists perform in random order. This means: 1) We won’t know if we are performing in finals until 5:15pm and 2) If we are performing in finals (which would be a HUGE honor at Area), we won’t know what time we perform until 5:45pm or so. We’ll send out a twitter message with the plans for the evening once we know the prelims results. If the band does not make finals, we will come home for the evening to pack up the marching supplies and give everyone a well deserved evening off.

For those who have not been through this process before, the Area Marching Contest is the final step before advancing to the UIL State Marching Contest. Richardson High School is in UIL Region 3 and Area C, which is one of the most competitive regions in the entire state! In order to advance to Area, a band must make a Superior rating (1) at the Region UIL Contest. 1st division Band’s from the regions that make up Area C then come together to compete at the Area Marching Contest. Needless to say, we are in the company of the BEST OF THE BEST here!

For every 5 bands in attendance at the Area Marching Contest, UIL will send one band on to the State Marching Contest. This year, there are 22 bands from across the Area who earned 1st Division ratings and will be competing on Saturday. This means that Area C will advance the top 4 scoring bands in Finals to State.

If you are a parent who is not chaperoning/helping on the field, we NEED you in the stands supporting the band. The location of the contest is:

Here’s how this works: when the band enters the field and the announcer calls our name, we need a fleet of parents in the stands cheering and going NUTS for the kids. This is all part of the competition! It sends a message to the judges that… “hey, you really need to pay attention to this band!” While we have many parents already traveling with the band as volunteers, they will be down on the field helping with equipment. Come out and see the finished product of what your kids have been toiling away for because trust me, the football games have just been a preview of the contest show.

Parking is free. Admission to the contest is $5.00 and that will cover entrance to both Prelims and Finals. Student performers do not need to pay to enter. Children under 6 are free. For our volunteers, UIL provides 25 total volunteer passes. This means that you should be prepared to pay the $5.00 entry fee just in case.

Student Info

You are going to need to bring a good number of items with you on Saturday. Pay careful attention as we’ll have several different “outfits” for the day.

When you arrive in the morning, you’ll need to be wearing:

  • UnderArmor Shirt underneath your “Your Majesty” shirt
  • Athletic shorts for under your uniform pants
  • Marching Shoes
  • Long black socks (MUST HAVE)

You’ll need to bring your duffle bag. Inside your duffle, you’ll need our “stands uniform” which will be:

  • 2012 Your Majesty Show Shirt
  • Jeans
  • Tennis shoes

You’ll come and drop your items off in the band hall, head to the uniform racks and put on your uniform pants, grab your shako and a plume. When the whistle blows, at 11:15am on the stadium field, you’ll be wearing:

  • UnderArmor Shirt w/ a coat or jacket (its going to be cold)
  • Jeans
  • Marching shoes
  • Long back socks

After rehearsal, we’ll head to the cafeteria to eat. Inspection is at 11:55pm – you’ll have 40 minutes from rehearsal to inspection. At inspection, we’ll be dressed in and will have:

  • UnderArmor Shirt (and a coat/jacket)
  • Athletic shorts for under your uniform pants
  • Marching Shoes
  • Long black socks (MUST HAVE)
  • Instrument in case (winds that don’t go on the truck)
  • Duffle Bag (with your stands uniform inside: Your Majesty shirt, jeans and tennis shoes)

At 12:15pm, we’ll depart for Mesquite. Upon our arrival, you’ll get all the instructions you’ll need.

If you are taking the SAT on Saturday, you need to arrange for your own transportation to Mesquite Memorial Stadium in case you do not get out of the test before we depart at 12:15pm. After the Skyline game on Friday, you’ll need to take home your full uniform, instrument/flags and everything else you will need for Area. If you get out of the test in time, great… grab your stuff and join us on the bus. If not, go to Mesquite Memorial and find the band buses (which will be in the same place as they were at Region UIL). YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST BE AT MESQUITE MEMORIAL BY OUR WARM UP TIME AT 1:40pm.

After our prelims performance, we’ll get changed out of uniforms, put the uniforms back on the rack, get changed into the stands uniform and head into the stands to watch the rest of prelims. Please note: You are to keep your underarmor shirt and athletic shorts on underneath your Jeans/Your Majesty shirt.

If we make finals (which would be a HUGE honor!), everyone will receive dinner via the contest meal plan between prelims and finals. You may want to bring additional money for souvenirs and/or concession stand goodies. If we do not make finals, we’ll come back to RHS, unpack everything and have a quick meeting.
